2015 excise tax bills were mailed January 26, 2015 and are due Thursday, February 26, 2015. Bills are based on information provided by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles and include vehicles and plates registered in Bernardston as of January 1, 2015. Bills that are not paid in full by February 26 are subject to additional interest and fees, even if you have filed for an abatement (see below).
If you wish to dispute your bill because, for example, you no longer have the vehicle and/or plates, or you do not live in Bernardston, or you think the vehicle is overvalued, you must file an abatement application with the Board of Assessors, requesting that they lower your tax. Even if you file for an abatement, the original tax is still due and must be paid by the original due date. If your abatement application is approved by the Board of Assessors, you may be eligible for a refund. The Assessors can be reached at 648-5407. Abatement applications are also available at Town Hall.
Excise taxes can be paid in person during office hours, by mail, and online at the Tax Collector website. The Collector’s office is open Tues, Weds, and Thursdays from 9-12 noon and on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm.
