2017 excise tax bills were mailed on January 27 and are due on or before Tuesday, February 28. Bills are generated using information provided by the Registry of Motor Vehicles and include vehicles and plates registered in Bernardston as of January 1, 2017. Bills that are not paid in full by February 28 may be subject to additional interest and fees, even if you have filed for an abatement (see below).
If you want to dispute your bill because, for example, you no longer have the vehicle and/or plates, or you do not live in Bernardston, or you think the vehicle is overvalued, you may file an abatement application with the Board of Assessors, requesting that they lower your tax. Even if you file for an abatement, the original tax is still due and must be paid by the original due date. If your abatement application is approved by the Board of Assessors, you may be eligible for a refund. The Assessors can be reached at 413-648-5407. Abatement application are also available at town hall.
