2019 Excise Tax Bills

2019 excise tax bills were mailed on February 5, 2019, and are due on or before Thursday, March 7, 2019.  Bills are generated using information provided by the Registry of Motor Vehicles and include vehicles and plates registered in Bernardston as of January 1, 2019.  Bills that are not paid in full by March 7 may be subject to additional interest and fees, even if you have filed for an abatement (see below).

If you wish to dispute your bill because, for example, you no longer have the vehicle and/or plates, or you do not live in Bernardston, or you think the vehicle is overvalued, you may file for an abatement with the Board of Assessors, requesting that they adjust the tax amount.  Per Massachusetts General Law, even if you file for an abatement, the original tax is still due and must be paid by the original due date.  If your abatement application is approved by the Board of Assessors, you may be eligible for a refund.  The Assessors can be reached by phone at (413) 648-5407, or by email at:  assessors@townofbernardston.org.  Abatement applications are also available at the Assessors’ office in town hall.
