The Tax Collector’s office is closed to the public indefinitely due to the pandemic. The office will continue to operate in the absence of public office hours.
3 WAYS TO PAY YOUR TAXES
- UNIBANK Online Payment Center Real estate, personal property and motor vehicle excise bills may now be paid online with credit cards or through an electronic transfer from your checking account through Unibank. A convenience fee for all transactions will be charged by Unibank and must be paid by you, the bill payer. These fees can be significant.
- By Mail Tax payments may be mailed to PO Box 971, Bernardston, MA 01337. Please include the remittance copy in order to ensure that your payment is properly credited. If you would like a receipt, include a self-addressed stamped envelope and both portions of the bill. Do not send cash by mail.
- Your Own Bank’s Online Payment System Please make sure that it is clear what type of bill is being paid, including the bill number and year. If we cannot determine which bill you are paying, we will mail your check back to you and ask that you return it with the appropriate bill.
TYPES OF PAYMENTS
Checks should be made payable to “Town of Bernardston.” We do not accept checks payable to a third party, even with an endorsement. Any check that is returned to us unpaid by the bank, for whatever reason, will be subject to the statutory penalty of $25.00 as outlined in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 60, Section 57A. If the returned check was in payment of a tax bill and the payment due date has passed, interest and all other applicable fees will be charged to the account.
- Credit & Debit Cards
Credit & debit card payments may be made through the Unibank online system or at town hall during office hours. A convenience fee will be charged by Unibank and the credit card companies and must be paid by the bill payer. The fees can be substantial. For your protection, neither the Town of Bernardston nor Unibank stores payment information.
- Electronic Transfers
Electronic transfers from your checking account can be made through your own bank or through our Unipay online payment system for a fee.
